A quiet riverside village at the very top of Palm Beach County, next to Jupiter Island and the Loxahatchee River.
Overview
Small-village living on the Loxahatchee
Tequesta is a village of about 6,000 people at the northern edge of Palm Beach County, just north of Jupiter. It began in the 1950s as a planned community around the Tequesta Country Club and became a village in 1957.
Most of the village sits on the mainland along the lower reaches of the Loxahatchee River, and a small part is on Jupiter Island in Martin County. The name comes from the Tequesta people, who lived in this part of Florida long before European settlers arrived.
Homes range from established single-family streets to riverfront properties and condos near the water. The village has its own police department and fire rescue.
Local favorites
What locals love about Tequesta
Coral Cove Park
A county park on Jupiter Island with about half a mile of Atlantic beach on one side and the Intracoastal Waterway on the other. It is a favorite for shelling.
Blowing Rocks Preserve
Just north of Coral Cove, waves push through the largest outcrop of Anastasia limestone on the East Coast and throw up spray at high tide.
The river and the parks
Constitution Park sits off Tequesta Drive near the North Fork of the Loxahatchee River, next to the village recreation center. Jonathan Dickinson State Park, the largest state park in Southeast Florida, is a short drive north.
Getting around Tequesta
US-1 runs through the village and crosses the Loxahatchee River into Jupiter, where you join I-95 and Florida’s Turnpike. Reaching Jupiter Island and the beaches means crossing a bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway.
